SoFlo Scoop: Lake Okeechobee’s water level drops; Florida women living in poverty; Senate says “Yes” to recess

Good morning South Florida! Today is Wednesday, April 5. Miami is expected to be sunny with a bit of cloud and a high 86 and low 76; Key West will be partly cloudy with a high 83 and low 77; Fort Lauderdale will be partly cloudy with a high 88 and low 76, and for those in Naples it will be sunny with a high 88 and low 75. Time to get smart fast:

  • Lake Okeechobee’s water level has dropped below the minimum range to back up South Florida’s drinking water supply. The Army Corps of Engineers try to maintain the lake level between 12.5 to 15.5 feet year round; the lake was 12.46 above sea level on Monday. The South Florida Water Management District called residents and businesses to voluntarily increase water conservation efforts in March. Sun-Sentinel
  • A study done by the Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade showed that poverty is a persistent problem for women, as more than 15 percent live in poverty. In Miami-Dade, the rate is 20 percent. The Women’s Fund also found in their research that if women in Florida were paid the same as equal men in their field, the number of women living in poverty in Florida would drop by 50 percent. Miami New Times
  • Florida Senate said yes to a bill that will require elementary schools 20 minutes of recess everyday. Many parents in the state of Florida have lobbied to support the requirement of recess. The recess legislation had been approved by the House back in 2016 but stopped in the Senate because former education chairman John Legg wouldn’t hear the bill. Now, current education chairman Michael Bileca for the House could prevent the bill from going through. Miami Herald
  • The Florida Panthers will have to search for a new head coach. Tom Rowe, who had accepted Vincent Viola’s request to coach the team on an interim basis back in Nov. 27, will not be returning next season. Sun-Sentinel
  • A video captured from a police body cam showed how a police officer responded to a Florida home call from a woman, telling her to stop calling 911. Authorities say the woman and her 8-year- old son were found dead hours later. Naples Daily News
