Following the misfire, officers on campus made themselves more visible to show students they were there if needed, said USF Police Chief Chris Daniel.

While no additional action was taken by the university immediately after the incident, the university eventually implemented new initiatives for residential safety for on-campus students, according to USF Director of Media Relations Lara Wade-Martinez.
