On Friday, Cuban-born singer, songwriter and actress, Luisa María Güell, is set to headline the second concert of the free, annual, four-part “Noches Tropicales” concert series, presented by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department
The 2013/2014 “Noches Tropicales” concert season kicked off in September, at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, with a Latin Jazz gala starring 10-time Grammy award-winner, Edwin Bonilla, his Latin Jazz All-Star Ensemble, and guest appearances by Federico Britos, Gustavo Cruz, and Lucy Grau.
Now in its eighth year, “Noches Tropicales” has showcased traditional Cuban contemporary, Argentinean tango, Brazilian Jazz and a Spanish-language version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
“We select the entertainment based on our budget for the events, the wants and needs of the community around Tropical Park, the ability of the performers to draw a crowd and the availability of performers,” said Vivian Greer-Digon, “Noches Tropicales” project manager and coordinator.
Luisa María Güell’s most recent performance took place at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium with pianist, Jose Negroni.
Her music began to reach the masses in the 70s, after the release of “Yo no me Vuelvo a Enamorar,” which became a number-one radio hit in Latin America, Spain, France and the Spanish-speaking U.S.
Güell has since launched 28 albums and topped Latin Billboard charts with singles like “Caliente,” “Yo no Soy como Ave Mansa,” “Querida Amiga” and “Ella”.
“I’m looking forward to Luisa María Güell’s performance, and generally having a good time with my family,” said Eliezer Alvarez, 21, who first learned about the event through a friend.
“This will be my first Tropical Nights concert,” he said. “My mother and grandmother [are] really big fans of Güell’s music and have been following her throughout the years.”
All “Noches Tropicales” concert goers are encouraged to bring along a blanket, chairs and snacks to better enjoy the evening of entertainment. It will begin at 8 p.m. at Tropical Park, 7900 SW 40th St.
