Dan Evans is the news director and content chief of the SFNS and an associate professor of journalism at Florida International University. Prior to that, he worked at the Los Angeles Times as its community news editor. During his tenure, his publications received more than 80 local, state and national awards, including an EPPY from Editor and Publisher in 2012. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
Allan Richards is the executive editor and co-founder of SFNS. He formerly served as SJMC’s associate dean and chair of journalism department. He was awarded the 2009 Kaiser Family Foundation Fellowship for Global Health Reporting on HIV/AIDS. In addition, he was a judge for Scripps Howard National Journalism Awards from 2007-2015.
Alejandro Alvarado is the SFNS’s Spanish-language editor. He is an associate professor and the coordinator of the Spanish-language Journalism Masters at FIU. A former writer, producer, and business news anchor at CBS-Telenoticias, managing editor at ZDNet Latin America, copy editor at Noticiero Univision, producer at Univision’s news magazine show Aquí y Ahora, and contributor writer at México’s newspaper El Nacional, and Miami’s El Nuevo Herald. He is author of “Mexicanos al Grito de Guerra. Inmigrantes en el Ejército de Estados Unidos” (Plaza & Janes). He has written Op Eds for the leading Hispanic dailies in the U.S. He holds a masters and a Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Miami.
Nyamekye Daniel is the managing editor of SFNS. She has an associate’s degree in mass communication and journalism from Miami Dade College. Daniel is currently completing her bachelor’s in journalism, and minor in psychology at Florida International University. The Dean’s List student is also a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and Tau Sigma honor societies as well as the Society of Professional Journalists. Daniel’s love for storytelling drove her to pursue journalism.In high school, she was the newspaper editor, and she published a poetry book at 16 years old. The journalist continues to focus on making a positive impact on society with her writing.
Jayda Hall is the web editor for SFNS. She is president of the Society of Professional Journalists at Florida International University and the sports director of FIU Student Media. In 2015, Hall was a recipient of a scholarship awarded by the South Florida Black Journalists Association for her piece written on objective journalism. The story was later published in print and on the web by the Miami Times. The senior is majoring in broadcast media and minoring in criminal justice; she wants to pursue a career in investigative journalism.
Christina Brown is a staff reporter for SFNS. Born and raised in Miami, the city’s culture continues to inspire Brown. She has always had a passion for writing and people, and her ability to inform and connect her community is one of the main reasons she enjoys being a reporter.
Alexis Ramos is a staff videographer for SFNS. She is currently a broadcast media major at Florida International University and will be graduating in spring 2017. Her passion for broadcast media began in the fifth grade when she decided to be on the morning announcements crew instead of the safety patrol team. She fell in love with videography and has studied TV production every year since. Being a multi-sport athlete, she also has a passion for sports and would love to pursue a career in sports media.
Luis Centeno is a photographer for SFNS. He is a journalism student at Florida International University. Centeno became interested in journalism when he first received a SLAM magazine in the mail, and liked the idea of interviewing his favorite athletes. Centeno’s interests lie in sports and photography, and he is striving toward a career as a photojournalist.
Collin Simpson is a staff reporter for SFNS. He is a senior at Florida International University, completing his bachelor’s in Digital Media with a minor in Humanities. He was also a staff writer for The Beacon at FIU, covering the entertainment and literary events. This Dean’s list student has had a passion for storytelling and photography from a young age. He currently writes a blog entitled AuthorTalks. He is an avid fan of comic books, Sci-fi, and fantasy, using his background to share with his readers a personal first-hand look.
Alexandra Rodriguez is a staff reporter at SFNS. She is a journalism student at Florida International University. Her love for journalism began when she interned at the U.S. Southern Command her summer going into junior year of high school. Rodriguez wants to be a foreign correspondent or a White House correspondent. Her interest is in international relations, politics and cultural events. She is an active member of Society of Professional Journalists.
Zue Lopez-Diaz is a staff reporter for SFNS. She is currently an undergraduate double majoring in communication and international relations at Florida International University. She is also the assistant news director for FIU’s PantherNOW. She is particularly interested in news and investigative journalism.
