On Feb. 21, hundreds of Broward County students walked out of their classrooms, showing support for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High as well as protesting gun violence generally. Piper High School in Sunrise organized “#MSDStrong Remembrance Week” with the help of Susan Ortiz, an English teacher. On Feb. 15, the community of Parkland held a candlelight vigil at Pine Trails Park for the 17 lives that were lost in the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School the day prior. The event received an extensive amount of attention from various news outlets, which stirred mixed feelings among the grieving students.
